This
one of my favorite projects. Mark and I have known each other since
elementary school, but we shared an apartment during our college years
in Bloomington, Indiana, where we started writing together. Our first
collaboration was "All Around You"
(1993). In 1996, Mark was working at his father's store, and I was working
on my teaching certification. Around 8:00 every night, we'd meet at
Mark's parents house and work on the recordings for the first cassette.
The original idea was to release a 33 rpm 7" with 3 songs on each
side, and have all the songs on each side flow one into the other (a
la Beatles). This was inspired by some of our favorite Guided By Voices
packages ("The Grand Hour," "Static Airplane Jive").
We used everything from television snow to a Peruvian pan pipe to backwards
poetry. At the time, we were listening to quite a bit of Brian Eno,
Harold Budd, Dead Can Dance, My Bloody Valentine, and movie soundtrack
kinds of stuff. You can hear the influences, but I think we captured
a very unique and focused sound for this project. Mark moved to Denver,
and I to Orlando. I visited Mark in 2000 on Thanksgiving weekend and
we recorded "November's End."
There isn't a large volume of our recordings on tape, but there is plenty
more from where this music came from. All in time.
